The music describes the eternal resurrection of the hero who given final judge after the end of the life. This is a large-scale music. The formation is also so big. This consist three parts.
Suddenly, the music starts with an intense sound. And trumpet and trombone play the first theme. Then the horn plays the second theme softly on the eerie melody with the row string. This theme is called the theme of a comfort. The horn plays the first motif again on and off. The violins play softly tremolo, and the woodwind plays the fourth motif on the violins. This warm up gradually. The music becomes energetic, and is settled the fever. The first part comes to the end.

The second part is the part of evolution, and consists two parts. After the roll of a snare drum, the brass plays impressed melody, and an activity move start. A tension continues in first part, and the motif like- funeral march of the first movement appears at the final. In second part, the brass plays the motif of the first part. After that, the third part starts.

First, the string and trumpets play the second theme. Then, after the horn sounded like echoes at the backstage. The music is continued by brass at the backstage for awhile. And flute and piccolo join it. This indicates a nightingale singing.

Over one hour has already passed since the symphony started.
The mixed chorus starts to sing the praise “resurrection” with expression mysterious. This is the motif of resurrection recent. The orchestra plays the second motif, and has a mood emotional. The solo sings the forth motif, and chorus starts to sing the motif of resurrection again. The string, the alto solo, the soprano solo and the organ start to make the climax. All orchestra parts and chorus join it. The music is so powerful and spiritual. And it comes to the end as if all sounds are sublimated to heaven.

I have a CD of “Resurrection”. It was played by Saito Kinen Orchestra. The conductor is Seiji Ozawa. The performance is so solemn. I think that it is cool. I like it.

The melody will come out at the fifth movement. After theme played woodwinds, the music head to the part of middle, and you will feel bright. The solo violin flourishes too. Then the first melody comes back. After singing the alto solo, harps join to play. And then the music heads to the end quietly.

Gstav Mahler "Resurrection" 1

“Resurrection ” is the symphony No.2 of Gustav Mahler. Gustav Mahler wrote about 10 of unique and large-scale symphonies. This “Resurrection” is the most large-scale and has a dramatic force. The original title of “Resurrection” is “Auferstehung” in German. This means religious “revival of the dead”. Mahler wrote this symphony, because he was impressed by a poem which has theme “death for life”. He used the theme as a text in the fifth movement, so this symphony named “Resurrection”. Mahler’s music often has theme about “death”, and this “Resurrection” is the masterpiece in them.

The composition of this music takes after the ninth symphony of Beethoven. The first movement is the manner of a funeral march. The end movement is in major key and connected with resurrection. This form also takes after the Beethoven’s it.

The formation of this music is large-scale too. The following musical instruments are used. And as parts of vocal, a soprano solo, an alto solo, mixed chorus are required. Besides, many the brass and percussion are required at the back of the stage. It is hard to gather such many members, so this music is not easy to play. This music especially has a holy nature.

The first movement

~Allegro maestoso. “Keep completely serious and have a expression solemn”~

This movement is a funeral marsh for a hero. At the first, the high string start tremolo, and the row string play the first motif on and off. The audience probably thinks that how this music unfolds. And the parts of woodwind instruments play the melody which is rising. The melody takes after funeral march. Then, the brass and cymbals join in them, and the music warms up hardly. The second motif has the string sound which is full with longing. So far the music has the dark mood, so the beautiful sound of the string is listened as if it is rising to the surface in another world.
The brass plays the first motif again. Horns and the row string play the new motif. It involves with the first motif, and they develop solid.

The part of evolution consists three parts. The first part is played by violins. At the first the melody is mild and like countryside, but the acrid first motif gain the force gradually, and it made the way to the end. The second part is played by flutes. Millet

I like Millet’s art. I especially like “L’ Angelus”.
I will explain about the picture.

Explanation

There is a married couple in center. In evening, after they finish their hard work at fields, they are saying their prayers while they are standing and look down. The fields spread out as horizon, but there are few green there. It does not look like fertile fields. And I can see there is a church at right near horizon. The church is in neighboring village. The married couple says their prayer while they listen to the bell.

The man stands in left erect the scythe at ground. The scythe probably was used for work in fields by the man. He is holding his hat. He looks down because he prays. But I think that he look like to feel embarrassed.
On the other hands, the woman standing in right praying eagerly with her head drooping. There are many baskets of potatoes and a wheelbarrow.

The theme of “L’ Angelus” is farmers live in countryside in their true colors. Millet didn’t draw beautiful and sweet pastoral landscape. He stuck to the truth of the countryside. But contrary to his thought, “L’ Angelus” was regard as religious arts and a protest against society. Many critics and citizens thought that the picture is a protest against society, because a revolution happened at Paris in those days.

Subject

Now, I will explain the times.
In the time, Revolution of February happened in Paris. Revolution of February was happened by citizens. The citizen had complaint against pressure of absolutism then. The revolution is radical. They tried to realize the ideal of republican. After that, the monarchy was overthrown. The citizens desired for republican, and citizen movement was expanding. As a result,

As a result, instead of the traditional opposition between aristocracy and civil, the upper bourgeoisie and the proletarian working class has been clearly appeared.

At that time, the radicals who try to reform were sympathetic, and the conservative was a critical way about the Millet painting. The picture was object of debate about politics.

But Napoleon III turned this phenomenon. He picked on Millet’s picture for the sake of sympathy of the large majority of the people. And for the political ploy make public the picture on a large scale.
However, the most confused person was Millet. He just drew real farmers. Millet wanted to be evaluated the value of it purely. He hated use of pictures for political.

Millet left many artworks of farmers. Why did he chose what does the farmer.
It is involved in the upbringing of Millet. He was born in a small rural place called Normandy as the son of a farmer. And he grew up until nearly 20 years to become a painter in Paris. Then he was seeing the sight of my father and mother work there. He knew the pain of working farmers. And he must have been drawn the bare truth.

Realism

The time he was living, Realism arts is winning popularity. Realism respects objective reality, and indicates the expression of art portraying the bare truth. The object is never distorted, abstracted and idealized. Realism came down much interest to reality from the previous romanticism. And instead of special events, persons in history or extraordinary drama, the reality of the time and life of people was set a high value. People did not require a classical education and noble history painting, and clearly and vulgar subjects was drawn actively. It is because the civil society change, and people who is not noble could get pictures in 19th century.

There are such his words.
“The thing can create all a lot of things in countryside and sound of bell is reality of expression.”
Through the words, we can realize his realism and his style of arts.

I think that Millet influenced on history of arts. And his work influenced on Gogh’s work too.
He determined the stream of realism. I think that “L’ Angelus” show us the spirit in realism.

Favorite movie: The Man Without a Past

The Man Without a Past is my favorite Finnish movie.
I will introduce about the movie.

A man is attack by ruffians, and he loses his name and memories. He tries to look for jobs, but he is refused by offices for his loss of memory. But he does feel more fun than sad, and he is full of life.
I think that he can alive vigorously because he finds the person who becomes his support. I know that Japanese eyes are focusing on the design and fashion of Finland. But I also know that there are many problems in Finland though they are not broadcasted at television. They are the problems about unemployment and rate of suicide, etc.
The village which people help the man at is desolate. I think it is the reality of Finland.
I have an unforgettable scene. He is going to go back his house. He is discovered by his wife. And at the day before homecoming, the man says to a woman “Can you help my packing?” The woman is his support. He falls in love with her.
I think that the word is confession of love. “Can you help my packing?” means “I want to stay with you.” I think that the man is clumsy and shy. I was impressed by his modest whisper and reserved love. There is a world that is silent and fragile in movies of Finland. I like the warmth very much.
