Book Review 2-16 "Pompeii"

I read this book titled “Pompeii”. Pompeii is a city of a part of the Roman Empire, in the first century AD. Pompeii was a busy trading centre. But Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in 79 AD. The buried city was discovered in 1800s. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy.

I didn’t know about Pompeii. I was surprised at the fact of disaster. I think that human cannot overcome natural disaster. I want to go to Pompeii someday, and I want to see the remain of the an ancient city.

Book Review 2-09 “Galileo Galilei And The Beginning Of Modern Science”

I read the Galileo Galilei And The Beginning Of Modern Science. In this book, career of Galileo Galilei is introduced. I had known only his name. I was surprised when I knew his career.

Galileo Galilei was born in Italy in the 16th century. I think he was so clever person. It is because he was an astronomer and physicist. He was the first person who used a telescope to see many of the planets and stars, and he discovered many important facts about astronomy. He accomplished many feats. But he got the death punishment and died. I could not understand at first. Why was he gotten the death punishment though he accomplished many feats?

It is because he dispersed an idea. The idea was contrary to the Christ’s teaching. He thought that the earth isn’t the center of the space and it moves in the space, that is to say the heliocentric system. In that time, people were thinking that the earth is the center of the space and all things go round the earth. The thought was based on belief in God. It was implicit truth. In that age, Galilei make the idea public. Naturally he was gotten the accusation. Churches urged him to give up the idea. But he continued the study. He was accused again and gotten the death penalty.

I think that his idea is great invention in history. He knew the truth, but he wasn’t accepted by then people. Religion and belief affected thought of people. And people won’t leave for outside of the thought. His idea was in advance of the times. He died unhappily, but I think the existence of him was essential for present people.

Book Review 2-2

GUCCI –Business in fashion

GUCCI is famous around the world for beautiful and expensive clothes and products. In this book, the history and achievement of GUCCI are introduced.

GUCCI is an old company. The company was started by Guccio Gucci in 1921 in small town of Italy. A chance that GUCCI became famous was a wonderful idea of Guccio Gucci. One day, he thought of line of green/ red/ green. The famous GG logo came from a stirrup. And the line came from the design of a horse’s saddle. People liked these products. I didn’t know the logo and the line came from a horse. It is very interesting. I think that the key of success is an impression of the trade mark.

Many famous people around the world wear GUCCI. We can see famous people in photographs and on television and magazine. When they wear clothes of GUCCI, they advertise GUCCI product. In this way, GUCCI can get an image of the expensive and rich company.

I think that fashion is a mass of images. When there is a simple bag, someone gives a concept to it. Then, it becomes a valuable thing. I think that the quality and wills of maker change products. I always buy clothes of mass production. But I try sometimes to think about the message and concept of clothes.

Book Review 2-1

Under the Ground

In this book, many things about “under the ground” are introduced. At first, a famous wall painting of Lascaux in France is introduced. This wall painting was detected by five boys unexpectedly, when they took a dog for a walk. I was surprised, when I knew the circumstance about the discovery of the wall painting. And this book introduce about the way to be made caves and animals in cave. Caves are unique living environment. Caves are really dark and cold. Animals in caves adapt to the environment.

In modern ages, underground is used as spaces of human living. And in the present, there are subways, tunnels and basements of residences etc. under the ground. The underground is indispensable place.

I think that this book is interesting, because it catches the underground from many kinds of points. There are some pictures in this book. In them, the show cave in China is so beautiful. It is shined with colorful indirect lightings. I think that it is a harmony natural and human works.

I am happy that I always go shopping in underground shopping center and take a train naturally. At first, underground is a mere natural hole. But now, the hole became places of human living. I think human develop is wonderful.
