The forth movement
~Solemn and concise~
Alto solo comes in here for the first time. Mahler wrote about this movement "I came from God, and I go back to God". He described the longing for the heaven of the hero in pain.
The alto solo starts to sing, "Oh, you Red Rose". After singing, we can hear the melody of the chorale-like with trumpet from behind the stage. It is very quiet and beautiful melody. The melody will come out at the fifth movement. After theme played woodwinds, the music head to the part of middle, and you will feel bright. The solo violin flourishes too. Then the first melody comes back. After singing the alto solo, harps join to play. And then the music heads to the end quietly.
It was a song originally, so this is a very short movement. However, the song is a pivot in all movements. The song reveals the composition of all movements like following.
The first movement: The tragic life
The second movement: The released life in primitive
The third movement: The impulsive life in the chaos.
In the fourth movement, after overcoming such situation, human longs for death. This is evolved in the next fifth movement in more detail.
