I read “Clothes Then and Now”. In this book, history of clothes and fashion is introduced. I have been interested in clothes and fashion. I always enjoy them. Today, I will introduce about them of old days and now.
In primitive age, there were no shops, of course. People produced their clothes themselves. They killed animals for food, and made clothes from skin of animals. The clothes helped to keep them warm and protect them from scratches and insect bites. Clothes of animal’s skin are still sold at shops. People buy them, because they are fashionable and help to keep warm.
But some people think it is wrong to wear skin from animals, because clothes from skin lead to too much hunting. In fact, some wild animals are in danger of dying out, so hunting these animals is prohibited by laws in many countries.
In this book there were lots of surprises. The most surprising bit of information about clothes was "People have worn uniforms for thousands of years."(Julie, 2007, p.20). I don’t know that there were uniforms from that early day. I knew the origin of uniform is clothes of nurses. I think certainly he or she is a nurse when I see a person who is wearing uniform of nurses. And somehow, I am tense up when I see a person wearing uniform of policeman. I think uniforms are very convenient when people show the work and what school they go to.
I like fashion, and I always want many clothes. But I knew one truth about clothes. It is that there are many people make our clothes by hand somewhere in the world. Moreover they are working for low wages. Clothes sold at shops are very brilliant, but I think we must not forget the fact.
